Sapnil Patel

Software & AI Engineer — with receipts: my code saves a real company $80,000+ a year in production, my research is peer-reviewed and published, and the web server I wrote from scratch in C++ clocks 1.6× nginx's throughput on measured benchmarks.

If your team ships hard things, we should talk.

llm-inference-optimizer

A distributed LLM serving platform that makes LLaMA-3 & Mistral answer faster, cheaper, and at higher volume.

2.3×

throughput vs FP32 baseline

−38%

GPU memory

p50–p99

tail latency, tracked & tuned

The problem. Naive LLM serving runs one request at a time in FP32 — GPUs sit idle between requests and memory is wasted, making inference slow and expensive.

  • ▸Dynamic batching: concurrent requests merged into a single forward pass within a max_wait_ms window
  • ▸Explicit KV-cache decode loop with a memory estimator for OOM-safe admission control
  • ▸FP16/BF16 mixed precision with automatic CPU→FP32 fallback
  • ▸Tensor parallelism across GPUs via DeepSpeed, with async batching scheduler and admission control for backpressure
  • ▸Prometheus + Grafana observability; deployed on GCP via GKE with horizontal pod autoscaling for zero-downtime serving

SDE · Systems

minisearch

A search engine built from first principles — crawler, index, and ranker — answering queries in milliseconds, with the performance numbers to prove it.

1–13ms

p50 query latency (BM25, 20K docs)

7,400

pages/sec crawl @ 40 MB peak memory

99×

less URL-dedup memory vs a hash set

The problem. Search frameworks hide the interesting parts. Building the whole pipeline from scratch — crawling, deduplication, indexing, BM25 ranking — exposes every data-structure and memory trade-off that makes real search engines fast.

  • ▸Positional inverted index with sorted posting-list intersection, phrase matching, and bounded min-heap top-K selection
  • ▸Parallel async crawl pipeline: bounded worker pools, backpressure, a priority frontier enforcing per-host politeness, graceful shutdown
  • ▸From-scratch bloom filter for URL dedup — measured 1.02% false-positive rate, within 2% of theory
  • ▸215 tests passing in CI

Field note: Inverting the question — look up the word, not the page — is the one trick that makes every search engine fast.

What I do

Backend & Distributed Systems

Concurrent, high-throughput microservices — FastAPI, PostgreSQL, Redis, async pipelines with backpressure and admission control.

Low-Level & Performance Engineering

Systems from scratch: an epoll HTTP server in C++17 that beats nginx, a search engine with measured millisecond latency. Benchmarked honestly.

Agentic AI Systems

Multi-agent workflows, reasoning loops, autonomous task execution — LangGraph, CrewAI, human-in-the-loop pipelines.

LLM Applications & Fine-Tuning

RAG, natural language → SQL, LoRA/QLoRA domain adaptation, inference optimization, rigorous evaluation.

Data & ML Engineering

End-to-end pipelines from ingestion to serving — PyTorch, TensorFlow, XGBoost, distributed evaluation at scale.

On the trail

Travel and hiking are how I reset — new cities, new trails, and the occasional summit. Living in LA means the mountains and the coast are both an hour away, and I take full advantage.

Behind the lens

Photography, mostly of the places the hiking takes me. Framing a shot scratches the same itch as designing a system: composition, constraints, and knowing what to leave out.

Hiring?

Here's the short version.

I graduate from USC this December and I'm looking for a full-time software or AI engineering role. What I bring isn't potential — it's a track record: my code is in production saving a real company $80,000+ a year, my research is peer-reviewed and published, and my side projects ship with real, reproducible benchmarks — including a C++ web server that outpaces nginx. I ramp fast, measure everything, and own outcomes end to end.
